Indian shuttler PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth have had a contrasting start to the Dubai Super Series Finals, with the former defeating He Bingjiao of China 21-11, 16-21, 21-18 in a clash that lasted just more than an hour. While the latter suffered a straight-game (13-21, 17-21) defeat at hands of World No.1 and defending champion, Viktor Axelsen.
Sindhu, going into the round with a 4-5 head-to-head record against the Chinese, utterly dominated the first game, but faced the similar fate in the second. Bingjiao started off the decider in ultimate fashion, leading the Hyderabad-born shuttler 4-2 in the initial proceedings, but Sindhu marked a brilliant comeback and took a stable 11-7 lead as the game headed into the break.
Bingjiao, however, was never the one to deny and the Chinese indeed delivered what was promised. She somehow managed to crawl back and even came close to equal the scoring, but Sindhu’s placement coupled with Bingjiao’s errors led the Indian to a brilliant victory; a well-deserved victory.
Meanwhile, in men’s singles, Srikanth seemed nervous right from the beginning. Taking a perfect advantage, Axelsen wrapped up the win in just 38 minutes. The Guntur-born shuttler entered the round on the back of a win at the quarterfinals of Denmark Open but failed to repeat the feat. Srikanth started off in brilliant fashion, leading the Dan 10-7 at one point, but soon after the break, Axelsen cruised past Srikanth in no time and registered the first game to his kitty.
Seemed like Axelsen was on a spree as he took an early 5-1 lead in the second game and despite Srikanth trying his best to shake Dan’s dominance, his own errors cost him some important points at the end. Axelsen eventually sealed the match when the Indian hit the net.
With that being done, Sindhu will now face Sayaka Sato -who lost to Akane Yamaguchi 12-21, 19-21 in the opening round – of Japan on Thursday, while Srikanth will face Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen.
