Badminton Association of India (BAI) will be sending a 10-member team to Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games set to take place between April 4 and 15.
PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal are the two big names in the women’s team, who will also be competing in the mixed team event. World number 3 Srikanth Kidambi will be competing in the men’s singles event along with HS Prannoy, who clinched silver medal at the 2016 Summer Youth Olympic Games.
Making their Commonwealth Games debut will be Chirag Shetty and Saiwik Sairaj who have clinched 5 Badminton World Federation (BWF) international titles since 2016.
The women’s doubles team will comprise of Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponappa, who is a 3-time CWG medalist, clinching the gold at 2010 Delhi Games. Reddy will be pairing up with Pranaav Jerry Chopra in the mixed doubles event.
Ruthvika Shivani Gaade completes the 10-member team. She was bronze medalist winner the 2016 Uber Cup.
Anup Narang, General secretary of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) is quite upbeat about India’s chances in badminton. He told Hindustan Times, “I feel we have strong chance to win the competition this year, as our players have surged through the rankings and will give it their best shot at this prestigious event to bring laurels for the country.”
“It was tough to choose these players but after a long discussion we have chosen the ten best players to compete in the Commonwealth Games and we are positive that they will make the country proud.”
