The badminton guru of India, Pullela Gopichand has turned 44 today. The man, who is responsible for bringing the badminton revolution in India, has given so much to the sport that we might fall short of words. Hence, we had this pleasure of talking to one of his students, Kidambi Srikanth about how big of an influence Gopichand is, and we got some beautiful answers to that.
We asked the 24-year-old as to what is the role of Pullela Gopichand in his career and the shuttler’s answer was crystal clear. “I cannot really comment on what he has done because you know he has done a great job,” Srikanth told Sportswallah
“For me, especially, he has been the inspiration and is the one who believed in me more than anybody else. A big credit goes to him in my career for sure.”
“I think he is definitely the one who has really had the vision of taking the Indian badminton to the international level and he definitely has done a great job.”
Kidambi is one of those few Badminton players who has won four Super Series titles in a calendar year (French Open, Indonesia Open, Denmark Open and Australia Open). It definitely is all down to his hard work and his dedication, but Gopichand – in one way or the other – needs a mention in this.

Upon asking how strict is Gopichand when it comes to training, the World No. 2 continued,“Yes, he is definitely a tough guy on court. He really wants everything to be perfect and doesn’t want to take any chance and that is why the results are coming up. You know, if it’s anything new, he first tries it on himself and then tell us to do it, and yes he is definitely strict.”
No one can really argue to the fact that Indian shuttlers are the humblest and down to earth athletes. We asked Kidambi as to what are those qualities inculcated in him since his young age and is there a reflection of Gopichand in it, Kidambi replied by giving a slick smile, “I think yes! We have grown up watching him and that’s how he is. You know, we watch him most of the time and he is a big inspiration for all of us and I think, he made us be it that way”
It certainly is a big day for the Indian badminton maestro and to add further charm to it, Fox Star Hindi, who made MS Dhoni The Untold Story, has announced that they will be producing a film on the life of Pullela Gopichand. What a day to mark an announcement of this stature.
