It was heartbreak for a second consecutive year for PV Sindhu as she lost to Spain’s Carolina Marin in the final of the 2018 Badminton World Championship. The Spaniard won the match 21-19,21-10 to win her 3rd title. The Indian had come second in last years final as well losing to Nozomi Okuhara 21-19, 20-22, 22-20 to end up in runners-up position.
In a rematch of Rio Olympic final, the match was expected to provide some entertainment, but it rather turned out to be a one-sided affair as Marin completely dominated her Indian rival to pocket her third title.
In the opening game, Marin raced to 2-0 lead but Sindhu pulled things back to level the game at 3-3. Both the players played cautiously and relied more on rallies to take points. The Indian then raced to 5-3 lead. SOme unforced errors from Marin allowed Sindhu to extend her lead to 8-6. The Spaniard did fight back to reduce the margin, but the Indian held onto two-point advantage to enter the break with 11-8 advantage.
After the interval, Marin continued to make errors allowing Sindhu to take a four-point advantage. The seventh seed Spaniard staged a strong comeback with some excellent game near the net to equal the score at 15-15. In a see-saw battle between the two, it was Marin who finally managed to take the first game 21-19 as Sindhu hits the shuttle on the net.
The second game, looked a one-way traffic as Marin raced to 5-0 lead. Sindhu continued to struggle against her rival unable to return her smashes. AT the interval it was Marin who had 11-2 lead.
There was no change in the game after the interval as Sindhu’s unforced error allowed Marin to stretch her lead. In the end the seventh seed clinched the game and match 21-10.
