HS Prannoy shocked the world and defeated the most in-form badminton player in the world, Kidambi Srikanth at the National Badminton Championships. The women’s final too had another major upset as two of the biggest women’s badminton players in India faced off in a match between Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu with Saina Nehwal coming out on top.
The match between Srikanth and Prannoy was a hard-fought affair which all the way in three gruelling games. In the end, Prannoy came out on top with a final scoreline of 21-15, 16-21, 21-7. Prannoy won the first game but Srikanth being the tough competitor he is and being one of the top players in the world won the second game. But his fightback seemed to have sapped all his energy and he lost the final game 21-7.
In the other big final between Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, Nehwal captured her old blistering form to beat 21-17, 27-25. Both the games were even encounters, especially the second game with the pendulum swinging in favour of both the players. But Saina used all her experience to win the game and claim the National Championships.
After the victory, an elated Saina told as quoted by Times of India, “I am surprised with the way I played today. I moved well and picked Sindhu’s difficult shots.”
Prannoy too was over the moon with his win and told PTI, “It means a lot. It came at the right time for me. I have been playing this event. It is great that I could beat Srikanth in the final. I have been playing well before this tournament and hope to do well in future.”
