It’s that time of the year where best of action has started and where best teams in the NBA are battling to be crowned champions. Among the stars battling are two of the best players in the league with combined 6 MVP’s between them. Both have one thing in common. They both want to be the absolute best.
Even though they both were born in the same place, Akron, Ohio, their journey to NBA has been very different. One was the ‘chosen one’, whereas other was merely a basketball player, who shined through his ability to shoot 3 pointers. Yes, we are speaking about two of the best players in the league right now: Lebron James and Stephen Curry.
Let talk about Lebron James the ‘chosen one’. When he came to the league he was merely a 16-year-old boy with high expectation on his shoulders. Over the years he has made NBA his yard and lived up to all the expectations and surpassing them. With 3 NBA titles, he has set himself to be counted among the best player to ever play the game. He has set a benchmark for all the other players to be compared to in the current era. Over the years, he has had battles with many greats and Hall of Famers like Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Paul Pierce. But his current rival or for the past 4 years has been Stephan Curry.
Stephan curry is not your normal NBA player, he lacks height compared to others, but his ability to shoot the basketball range has made him a superstar in his own right. Lot of us can associate with him and see ourselves in him. He has worked hard to be where he is today, fighting for his 4th NBA Championship. In a recent interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nicolas, he said: “I do not know what the NBA finals looks like without Lebron James.” This rivalry started in the 2015 NBA finals when they both met for the first time. This was the year he won his first NBA MVP.
Over the course of next year, Stephen Curry led his team to an NBA record season of 73-9. He was named first ever unanimous MVP of the league. Somewhere over in northeast Ohio, this all was being noticed by LeBron James. He was aware of the rise of Stephen Curry. In the 2016 NBA finals, LeBron led his team to historical comeback from 3-1 down to win the Championship. Cavaliers were the first team in the league to have completed this amazing feat. Following year during Halloween party hosted by LeBron James pictures of Stephen Curry’s tombstone cookies emerged, adding fuel to the rivalry that has been brewing over the past two years.
Stephen Curry who is known as the baby face assassin has always said that he has looked up to LeBron James to improve his game and be better, and if you ask LeBron he would say the same. But during over-time of the final, this rivalry was visible to the world when both of them got into a trash-talking contest with each other. There is no denying that this will go in history as a rivalry of the best players in a league where there has been a fierce rivalry between Michal Jordan and Isaiah Thomas, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird and Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russel. It will not be as big of a rivalry as Magic and Bird or Micheal and Isaiah but it has the fuel and fire to be a great story nonetheless. With the finals underway, these two men will battle each other for the fourth time with stakes at an all-time high. All that is left to see is who comes out on top.
