Ukrainian former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko has been linked with a comeback in the ring, two years after being beaten by Anthony Joshua. He retired in 2017 and is now reportedly in talks with DAZN over a sensational £76million return to boxing.
The Ukrainian heavy-hitter has not stepped in the ring since his knockout defeat by Anthony Joshua at Wembley. DAZN promoter Eddie Hearn has now revealed that the streaming service has already opened discussions over a potential return.
As the strategic and intelligent boxer hints to make a comeback, we shed some light on a few facts about him that most of the boxing fans might not know about.
Early life as an Olympian
His father was an Airforce major general for the Soviet while his mother was a homemaker. Klitschko and his elder brother, Vitali, both showed interest in athletics from a young age. Klitschko followed his brother into amateur boxing, and, when Vitali lost his chance to compete for Ukraine in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games because of steroid use, Wladimir took his place on the team and earned the super heavyweight gold medal.
Wladimir Klitschko is currently in a longterm relationship with actress Hayden Panettiere. They began seeing each other in 2009 after meeting at a book launch party of a mutual acquaintance. Despite a brief split in 2011, the pair got engaged in October 2013 before welcoming a child together, a daughter named Kaya, born on December 9, 2014.
Klitschko was previously married to Ukrainian model Aleksandra Avizova from 1996-1998.
He has never fought his brother in the ring
Klitschko’s elder brother, Vitali Klitschko A.K.A Dr. Ironfist is also a famous boxer who once held the WBC, WBO and Ring magazine heavyweight titles with a record of 45 wins and 2 losses.
The Klitschko brothers never got to fight each other in a professional fight because their mother made them promise her they would not!
Once in a statement, he quoted, “Vitali is always standing in my corner when I fight and I stand in his corner when he does. We recently found out that is also a great help at the staredown before the fight. Our opponents are always confronted with two pairs of bad looking eyes who stare them down.”
Fun Fact: An asteroid named Asteroid212723 Klitschko (named after the brothers) was spotted floating through space in 2007 by an observatory in Ukraine, who wanted to thank the brothers for their work with different charities.
