We are talking about two of the legends of the game – Rahul Dravid and Kumar Sangakkara. There have been many similarities between the two cricket icons of World cricket. Both Dravid and Sangakkara have sacrificed a lot for their teams. On one hand, if Dravid put on the wicketkeeping gloves for his side to bring the right balance to his team, Sangakkara too did the same for Sri Lanka.
The other similarity between the two is that they both batted at the same position of number 3 for their teams. These close similarities between these two gems of cricket make us demand a comparison between the two as well.
We tried to look at the following five parameters to compare the two greats of the game. Check out what we found:
Better average: Kumar Sangakkara runs away with a better Test match average than Rahul Dravid. While Rahul has scored 13288 runs in 164 matches he has played for India at an average of 53.21, Sangakkara has amassed 12400 runs in 134 matches at an average of 57.40.
Performance in Tests outside home: Rahul Dravid has played 94 Tests outside home and averages 53.03 in them. On the other hand, Kumar Sangakkara has scored at an average of 53.13 in 53 Tests he has played outside home. There is no clear winner here.
Performance against the top teams: Rahul Dravid’s best performance has come against the New Zealand and the West Indies. He has scored at an average of 63.80 against both these teams. He, however, has not done great against the Australians with an average of just 38.67. Against England, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, he has an average of 60.93, 33.83, 53.73, 48.64 respectively.
Kumar Sangakkara’s best Test average is against the Kiwis which is a startling 74.64. His figures though fall too short of Dravid’s when performance against the other teams is compared. Sangakkara averages 40.20, 52.00, 47.93, 49.27 against the likes of England, India, South Africa and Pakistan respectively. Clearly, Dravid wins the race here.
Batting average as Captain: Kumar Sangakkara goes one notch ahead of Dravid here again as the Sri Lankan has a way better batting average than Rahul Dravid while captaining his side. Sanga has scored 1601 runs in the 15 Test matches he has captained in. His batting average there is an amazing 60.60. Rahul Dravid has scored at an average of 44.51 in 25 matches he stood as captain of his side.
Number of double centuries: Rahuld Dravid’s Test career saw him crossing the 200-mark 6 number of times. His highest score in Test matches remains 270 runs. Sangakkara edges ahead of Rahul Dravid by a big margin in this race as he has 11 double centuries in his 134-match career. He has a triple ton to his name as well.
