South Africa and Sri Lanka will meet in the first match of Group B at the Kensington Oval in London in the 2017 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy. South Africa will start the match as heavy favourites against a Sri Lankan unit which will be without their influential skipper Angelo Mathews and a team which is in transition.
South Africa head into the tournaments as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, but they will have the tag of perennial chokers hanging over their heads. They will have to show mental steel and resolve in the big moments, which they have failed to do on many occasions, in order to go all the way in the tournament.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, don’t have the weight of expectations hanging over their heads, which could well turn out to be a massive bonus for them. They will feel that with other teams taking them lightly, they could deliver a heavy jolt to them.
The pitch at the Oval will be a belter of a wicket to bat on and with the quality and star power which South Africa have in their line-up, we could well see a record ICC Champions Trophy score.
Head to Head:
The two teams have met 65 times in international cricket in the ODI format, with South Africa winning 34 matches and Sri Lanka winning 29 encounters.
