Chris Gayle has entertained the world with his explosive batting and record-breaking feats in T20 cricket but he has also gotten in trouble for his off-field antics. On January 2015, during BBL 2015-16 he misbehaved with a Channel Nine television journalist for which he was fined. In what initially appeared as a normal TV interview on the sidelines of a TV match, things went out of hand when Gayle uttered words that seemed to put the TV anchor in an uncomfortable position. The anchor in question happens to be Mel McLaughlin, who despite the comments from Gayle was professional throughout the course of the interview.
Mel was not expecting those comment from Gayle and was visibly taken aback by his words, but she maintained professional decorum and ended the interview with her head held high.
Gayle’s team Melbourne Renegades were chasing a modest 141 for a victory against Hobart Hurricanes. Gayle powered his way to a blistering 26-ball 41, which included 4 fours and 3 sixes. He along with his skipper Aaron Finch had put on 84 for the first wicket in the powerplay. Once Gayle was dismissed Mel approached him for a quick interview. She wanted to talk about his demolishing innings but Gayle had other ideas in mind.
Gayle answered, “I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well,” Gayle said to McLaughlin, when she asked about how aggressively he had batted. “That’s the reason why I’m here, just to see your eyes for the first time. It’s nice so. Hopefully, we can win this game and have a drink after. Don’t blush, baby.”
The Renegades won the match comfortably by 5 wickets with 6 overs to spare.
Not the first time for Mel
However, this was not the first time Mel was the centre of attention for her looks. In 2014, in an interview, Gayle’s international teammate Dwayne Bravo had a special message for Mel. In an interview with Michael Slater, Bravo said,”I want to say hi to Mel, beautiful Mel. I was lucky enough to meet her once in Sydney. Wanted to say hi and say she is still looking beautiful.”
This was not the first time Gayle was involved in such a controversy. During CPL 2014, he was neither fined nor banned for saying, “Well, I haven’t touched yours yet so I don’t know how it feels,” when he was asked about the surface he and his team were going to play in the next match.
What happened next?
Gayle was mobbed by the media at the airport and apologised to Mel.
Gayle was slapped with a $10,000 fine for his comments.
In April 2016, Gayle and his partner Natasha Berridge announced the birth of their daughter, who they named “Blush.”
