The word ‘great’ was never associated with fielders before Jonty Rhodes came into the cricketing scene. There were great batsmen, great bowlers but not great fielders. Fielding was one area of the game, where teams did not gave much stress. If you could stop the ball and throw it back to the bowler or wicketkeeper, it was considered more than enough. The arrival of Jonty Rhodes changed the definition of fielding forever.
Batsmen playing against South Africa in 90s had to be extra cautious while playing there shots, especially in the point region. Because there stood Jonty and it was impossible to get balls past him. As a batsman, you just could not think of playing an airy shot in the point region.
The legendary fielder turns 46 today.
