Sachin Tendulkar was not ‘The Sachin Tendulkar’ that we know today, in those days. He was just a 15 year old boy, with a baby face, who posed threat to bowlers in domestic cricket with his extraordinary batting. His enormous talent had begun to surprise everyone in the cricketing circle. It was the Bollywood actor Tom Alter, who took Sachin’s first TV interview.
In this interview, Sachin is seen shyly replying to all the questions put in front of him by Tom. The shyness could be seen on his face but at the same time, he is oozing confidence in his answers.
Here are some excerpts from the 2 minute interview he gave to Tom Alter.
Tom Alter: You must be tired of answering questions by journalists by now, Sachin?
Sachin: I think it is just the start.
Tom Alter: Would you be happy if you are picked in Indian squad for West Indies tour or you want to give more time to yourself in order to prepare better? Many people believe that you are too young to be facing the fierce pace of Curtly Ambrose and Malcolm Marshall.
Sachin: I will be really happy if I am picked for the India side. I will have no problem in facing Marshal or Ambrose.
Tom: Do you like playing pace bowling? Any particular reason for that?
Sachin: Yes, I like playing pace because the ball comes straight on to the bat.
Tom: You used to bowl pace in your school too? Isn’t it?
Sachin: Yes. I used to bowl only medium pace.
Tom: Would you like to keep bowling in Ranji Trophy as well?
Sachin: Yes, may be in short spells.
Tom: You also faced Kapil Dev in the nets at CCI stadium. Did you face any difficulty facing him? How was the experience?
Sachin: I enjoyed facing him. He was really good but I did not face any such difficulty.
Tom: You always wanted to be a cricketer?
Sachin: Yes, always.
