Dilshan Munaweera’s blistering fifty has taken Sri Lanka to 170-6 from their 20 overs in the 1st T20I against India at R Premadasa Stadium Colombo. Sri lanka lost a couple of wickets inside 5 overs, but they had an excellent run-rate. Skipper Upul Tharanga and opener Niroshan Dickwella were out of 5 and 17 respectively. Leggie Yuzvendra Chahal bowled exceedingly well after going for some runs early on in his innings. He conceded 43 runs in his spell, but also picked up 3 wickets and brought India back in the contest.
Munaweera then came in at No. 3 and immediately started going after the Indian bowling attack. He brought up his fifty off just 26 deliveries – 2nd fastest for Sri Lanka against India after Kumar Sangakkara. After he was dismissed for 53 off 29, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets one after the other. Sri Lanka as a result finished about 15 to 20 runs from where they would have eventually wanted to.
Ashan Priyanjan on T20I debut looked to get some quick runs in the latter stages of the innings, but the Indian bowlers kept at it and eventually got the results in their favour. Priyanjan held up one end and Isuru Udana, coming in at No. 9 hit some useful boundaries to take Sri Lanka to a good total in the end. Priyanjan eventually finished with run-a-ball 40 in the end.
Left arm-spinner Axar Patel was economical, while the Lankan batsmen failed to pick chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, who finished with 2-19 from his 4 overs.
Earlier, India had won the toss and elected to bowl. This is the first time in 5 matches Virat Kohli had won a toss in T20Is. Axar and KL Rahul came into the side for this match. While Sri Lanka roped in Dasun Shanka, Udana, Thisara Perera and Seekugge Prasanna for this one-off T20I.
India have dominated this tour so far, having completed clean sweeps in the Test and the ODI series before this match.
Sri Lanka 170 for 7 (Dilshan Munaweera 53, Ashan Priyanjan 40*; Yuzvendra Chahal 3-43) vs India.
