The Koffee with Karan episode with cricketers KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya received major tractions, and mostly for all the wrong reasons. The duo made some heinous comments about the women in their life, their families, as well as cheerleaders. Hardik led the charge with quite a few sprawling statements about his virginity and the multiple women in his life.
After the episode, the duo was handed a 5-match ban each by the BCCI. The ban has been served and both the players are now a part of the 15-man squad for the ICC World Cup 2019. We do move past things very quickly in this country, don’t we?
On Saturday the Board of Control for Cricket of India added to the two-match ban and have fined the players with Rs 20 lakhs each. The order was published on the official BCCI website, Mr Justice (retd) DK Jain stated that no further action will be taken against Pandya and Rahul, who have already served a provisional suspension and tendered an unconditional apology for their loose comments on women.
The fine is not towards the BCCI, it is to “each of the most deserving widows of ten constables in para-military forces who have lost their lives while on duty, through ‘Bharat Ke Veer App”. This amounts for Rs 10 lakhs of the fine.
The remaining Rs 10 lakhs are to be made to the fund created by the Cricket Association for the blind. As per the rules, all of these payments need to be made within four weeks of the date of order – 19th April 2019.
The players have publicly apologised for their behaviour, served a match-ban, and have now paid a fine of Rs 20 lakh each. However, there is nothing that can make up for the comments and statements made by these ‘gentlemen’ of the cricketing world.
