On the morning of 26th July 2016, nobody had thought in their wildest of dreams that Sri Lanka would even be competitive in the Test series which began on the same day against Australia. Almost two months from the same date, they have created history by whitewashing the Australians 3-0.
Sri Lanka registered a massive 163 runs in the Third test against Australia on Wednesday. This is also the first time Sri Lanka has won a series against the Australians. Before this series started, Sri Lanka had beaten Australia just once in 33 years. Expectations were not too high with the Island nation as they were coming in to the series after getting thrashed by the English side in their home. But Sri Lankas proved everyone wrong by displaying some outstanding cricket.
One of the factors for Sri Lanka’s success in the series was the warhorse Rangana Herath, who picked 28 wickets in the series with an average of 12.75. He was at his usual best on Wednesday as he clinched 7 wickets for just 64 runs, limiting Australian innings to just 160.
This was also Australia’s best chance in the Test match to register a victory. Chasing 324, they were 77 for 1 at lunch, requiring another 247 runs to win the match but then they self-destruct to lose the match by 163 runs.
