Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli has come out on the front-foot stating in no uncertain terms that the misogynist and sexist comments made by Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul on popular talk show ‘Koffee with Karan’ were simply unacceptable.
Pandya and Rahul have landed in big trouble, especially the all-rounder for his freewheeling comments on the popular chat show hosted by Bollywood director Karan Johar. Hardik Pandya, later, had to issue an apology for his comments on the show.
Kohli speaking to the press ahead of the first ODI against Australia in Sydney said:
“We, definitely, as the Indian cricket team do not support views like that and that has been communicated. I can definitely say that as the Indian cricket team and responsible cricketers we definitely don’t align with those views and those are purely individual views.”
Kohli also added that the two individuals were made aware of the magnitude of their statements and warned not to repeat such behaviour in the future.
“From the Indian cricket team point of view, any inappropriate comments that are made in that scenario are something that we definitely don’t support and the two concerned players felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude of what’s happened. Definitely, it has to hit anyone hard, they will definitely understand the things that have not gone right.”
Kohli concluded that a decision has not been made whether the two players will be a part of the side for the first ODI against Australia in Sydney. Reports have circulated that the COA has recommended a 2-match ban for both the players and face the risk of a suspension from the BCCI.
“We are still waiting for a decision to be made but from the Indian cricket team point of view this changes nothing in terms of our beliefs in the change room. It does nothing to the spirit that we’ve been able to create within the change room and these are purely individual opinions and something as I said which is inappropriate.”
People on social media and all across the country have already taken great umbrage to the behaviour of both Pandya and Rahul on the show. They have been termed by many as ‘classless’ and crass and public opinion on the two has certainly swayed on the negative side.
We spoke to a few individuals on the streets to gauge what the people feel about Pandya and Rahul’s remarks:
