On This Day March 12: South Africa register highest successful chase in ODI history
In one of the best ODI matches ever played, South Africa successfully chased down a target of 435 set by Australia inside 50 overs at Johannesburg on this day in 2006. Electing to bat first after winning the toss, on a flat Wanderers pitch, Australia put up a world record score of 434-4 from their 50 overs, thanks to a blistering 164 off 105 from Ricky Ponting. In reply, South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs played the innings of his career, scoring 175 off just 111 to take the Proteas to a historic victory. Graeme Smith scored 90 off 55 at the top. Mark Boucher's unbeaten fifty and some valuable contributions from the tail helped South Africa win with one wicket and one ball to spare.
