There is a saying that ‘match is made in heaven’ and if you are destined to find the right partner then the two people will finally end up meeting each other. It was in July this year that South African captain Dane van Niekerk found her life partner in team-mate Marizanne Kapp and both of them decided to get married. They recently made history against Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC World T-20 tournament.
Here are some interesting facts about the cricket couple.
Both the female cricketers became the first married couple to bat together in ICC tournament on Tuesday. The couple was involved in a 67-run partnership for the third wicket as South Africa cruised to a victory against Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the Women’s World T20 being held in the West Indies.
The couple became the second set of current international teammates to get married after New Zealand’s Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu last year.
Van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp made their international debut within two days of each other during the 2009 World Cup and on Monday.
Niekerk wanted to become fast bowler but on her dad’s insistence, she decided to try hand in spin. For Kapp, she tried hand in different sports but was introduced to cricket by her nephew.
The common thing shared by the couple is that both were included in Eastern Province Cricket Academy, playing alongside male cricketers in their early age.
Niekerk holds a record of taking four wickets without conceding a single run, beating a record shared by the likes of Australian great, Richie Benaud. On the other hand, Kapp became the first South African woman to claim a hat-trick in T20 internationals and also has the best figures of her career picking up four wickets at the cost of just six runs.
The South African captain is fourth on the list of the top run-getters with 1770 runs, while Kapp is two places below on the list with 1618 runs to her name.
Van Niekerk and Kapp are also high on the list of wicket-takers for their country in the T20 internationals, where they are second and third respectively.
Both Kapp and van Niekerk have also played one Test each when they took on India in 2014 in Mysore.
