On this day, in 1996, Sri Lanka were crowned world champions after they beat Australia by 7 wickets in the World Cup final at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. After being put into bat, Australia managed to put up 245-7. Australia captain Mark Taylor led from the front with 74. In reply, Sri Lanka batsman Aravinda de Silva scored an unbeaten 107 to help Australia chase down the target with 22 balls to spare. De Slva had earlier picked finished with figures of 3-47 from his 10 overs. This happens to be Sri Lanka’s only World Cup triumph till date.
