On this day, back in 2007, at Providence Stadium, Guyana, while playing against South Africa, Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga claimed first double hat-trick in ODIs. A double hat-trick happens when a bowler takes 4 wickets off consecutive deliveries. Malinga is till date the only bowler to do so. It was a Super Eight match during 2007 World Cup, in which Malinga almost stole the game away from South Africa from winning position. Chasing only 210, Malinga struck first by removing Shaun Pollock, when South Africa were only 14 runs away from victory. In next three deliveries, which spanned in two different overs, Malinga dismissed Andrew Hall for golden duck, Jacques Kallis for 86 and Makhaya Ntini for none. By this time, South Africa were now 9 down with only 3 runs needed and somehow managed to pull off the chase. South Africa did win that contest but the match is still remembered for a thrilling end and thanks to Malinga’s late brilliance.
