Jesse Lingard salvaged a point at Old Trafford after Burnley had stunned the Red Devils to take a 2 – 0 lead at half time. Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour struck for the Clarets before the Englishman’s double saved his team the blushes. However, the result meant that Manchester United have now drawn two consecutive fixtures (both 2 – 2) and that in turn draws defending champions Chelsea to within a point of their second place. Another match where the United defence was clearly rattled, and we take a look at how each player fared for the team.
David De Gea: 5/10
He needs help from the defensive line in front of him, but clearly is not getting any. Little he could do about either goals, but the Spaniard seems to have become shaky. Not his usual commanding self against Burnley and seemed to be hesitant in decision-making.
Ashley Young: 7/10
Proved to be a big threat on the attack. His crosses almost always spelt danger for the Burnley defence, as was his quick runs on the flanks. He got the assist for Lingard’s first goal and was energetic throughout the game.
Phil Jones: 4/10
Was helpless at the back due to lack of support from his fellow centre-back Rojo. Was good in the one-on-one situations, but largely exposed at times.
Marcos Rojo: 3/10
One of those performances the Argentine would want to forget. Conceded the foul that led to Burnley’s opener and also picked up his fifth booking in as many matches. Slow and easily exploited. United probably won’t even miss him when he serves out his suspension in the next game.
Luke Shaw: 6/10
An encouraging performance by him as he is improving with every game. Was especially good going forward and even forced Burnley keeper Nick Pope into two saves.
Nemanja Matic: 5/10
Not his usual dominating self in midfield. Dropped into central defence following Rojo’s substitution at half time, and did a good job.
Paul Pogba: 5/10
Did his utmost to drive the United midfield. Good work ethics and efforts were commendable. Did not create much of an impact though.
Juan Mata: 6/10
A lively performance by the Spaniard, and had the Burnley defence on their toes all the time. Just could not come up with a killer blow.
Marcus Rashford: 5/10
Used his pace to good effect and tried his level best to create openings. His touches at times however, let him down. No real impact created.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: 4/10
Was wandering about without doing anything useful. Tried getting into good positions, but clearly he is far from even nearing his best.
Romelu Lukaku: 3/10
Another defensive shoddiness led Barnes to score right in front of his nose. Was not much of an impact up front either. He seriously needs to up his game soon.
Jesse Lingard: 9/10
Came on for Rojo at half-time and immediately made an impression. First goal was the result of an exquisite skill, and showed good instinct and precision for the equaliser. Should do this more often.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan: 6/10
Came on for Ibrahimovic after half time and provided some much-needed fluidity in the attack. Not many decisive moments created though
