Rene Higuita was known as The Madman and rightfully so. He was eccentric as a goalkeeper, who made the term ‘sweeper keeper’ famous. He could be absolutely brilliant, as well as make a fool of himself with ridiculous blunders. On 6th September 1995, in a friendly against England at the Wembley, Higuita shocked the football world by bringing the scorpion kick out of his locker.
Everyone was shocked. Including the miserable crowd of only 20,000 at the Wembley, as well as the English players. The commentators too were amused by what they had just witnessed.
This still remains one of the most iconic moments in goalkeeping history, with Higuita jumping in the air, with both his feet off the ground and his his back arched like a scorpion’s tail pre-sting flicking up both of his heels with perfect timing to clear the ball. Even he couldn’t help and give away a smile.
The madman was at it again.
