On this day, 6 years back in the last of the first round matches in the FIFA World Cup, USA came up with a miraculous performance to edge out Algeria and proceed to the Round of 16 stages. It was an exhilarating match which went right down to the wire, and literally at the cusp of the end of extra-time, Landon Donovan slotted in a goal and slotted USA to play Ghana in the Round of 16. In the process, USA had also edged out England to second place, who eventually lost to Germany in the Round of 16.
Even though the score line may never reflect so, it was an exciting match where chances were created by both the teams but neither of them could manage to find the back of the net. Rafik Djebbour stuck a great shot but unfortunately, on to the crossbar in the first half while Jozy Altidore missed a great chance, created by a Donovan run in the first half. Eventually, USA managed to have a number of chances, created between the trio of Donovan, Dempsey and Altidore but none of them could convert it.
Eventually, it all came down to the extra time of the second half. Tim Howard latched on to a simple header and threw the ball across the field to a galloping Landon Donovan, who had acres of space as the Algerian players were attacking in the USA half. It was almost a 4 on 2 situation and Algeria looked like they were in deep trouble. Donovan sneaked it to Altidore, who laid out a simple cross to Dempsey, who then fluffed a chance by knocking it straight at the keeper, from three yards out. But as luck would have it and re-instill lives in the hearts of the USA fans, who thought the Dempsey chance was the end, the ball scurried right into the path of Donovan, who smashed it in and went off on a celebratory run, for what was USA’s biggest achievement on a football field in their limited history back then, in world football.
