Minnesota United midfielder Collin Martin has come out as gay. With the admission, Collin has become one of the few athletes to come out openly about being homosexual.
Martin made the announcement via social media on Friday morning ahead of Pride Night at his club who are taking on FC Dallas.
The 23-year-old young footballer took the internet by storm by making the announcement and at the same time helped break the stereotype belief that people hold about athletes.
The last big sportsman to make such announcement was American footballer Michael Sam in 2014. Other athletes who have made such announcements in the past are American footballer Robbie Rogers and NBA star Jason Collins.
Martin has played six Major League Soccer seasons – 4 with DC United and 2 with Minnesota United. Martin revealed that his family, friends and Management of Minnesota United know that he is gay.
In the long post by Collin, he wrote, “Tonight my team, Minnesota United, is having their Pride Night. It’s an important night for me. I’ll be announcing that I am an openly gay player in Major League Soccer. I have been out as a gay man for many years to my family and friends, this includes my teammates.”
