In an amazing turn of events, Italian publication Tuttosport has reported that Chelsea’s boss Antonio Conte blocked a move to sign Barcelona’s wonder man Neymar.
The same reports further mentioned that the Stamford Bridge outfit had their deal agreed for a reported fee of £155.5 million, but the former Juventus and Italy boss resisted to spent the aforementioned amount. They added:
“Blues owner Roman Abramovich had even agreed a £155.5 million fee with the Catalan giants to sensationally bring the 25-year-old to Stamford Bridge.”
Neymar indeed is a great player without a slightest of doubt and certainly would have been a great addition to the Chelsea squad who will be in a dire need of a sustainable depth next season, but Conte reportedly does not feel that this deal would bring any positives, as Neymar will not fit in the blueprint of Conte.
“Conte, 47, feels Neymar would not suit his style of play and, despite being keen to bolster his squad, he first wants to reduce numbers before making additions.”
Chelsea’s Russian billionaire Roman Abramovic has had a history of bringing some well-known striking names at the Bridge, but many of them have failed to live up the billing. Back in 2006, the Russian added Andriy Shevchenko to the squad, but their then manager Jose Mourinho relied only on the abilities of Didier Drogba and the Ukrainian failed to live upto the hype. Then came Fernando Torres and his Chelsea’s tenure is well known to everyone.
But now with Conte at helm, Abramovic is expected not to go against the Italian’s decision.
“Abramovich had reportedly come to an agreement with the Barca hierarchy, but he is unlikely to overrule Conte. The Italian has been interesting Serie A giants Inter Milan and the Chelsea owner will be determined to keep hold of his manager after such a successful season, where the Blues have excelled in a 3-4-3 formation, and he will be keen to back him in the summer.”
