Roma’s fiery midfield general Radja Nainggolan has admitted that he spoke to Antonio Conte about a possible move to Chelsea, but further said that he is happy in the Italian capital.
The 28-year-old midfielder was a subject of an interest from Chelsea in the past summer, but the move failed to transpire as Roma were reluctant to sell their prized asset, and Radja himself wasn’t pleased with the prospect of leaving Stadio Olimpico.
Nainggolan, who is currently with Belgium preparing for Saturday’s World Cup Qualifier against Greece, was surprising dropped by Roberto Martinez when he took over in the summer and the fans, as well as the media, went into a frenzy as Martinez failed to explain the reason behind his decision.
However, the 28-year-old is now back in the squad. Talking about his conversation with Conte, he said:
“I talked to him [Antonio Conte],” Nainggolan told Sky Sports. “Chelsea were really interested and wanted me over there.
“That’s all I can say.”
The midfielder has scored nine goals in 28 Serie A appearances and has been a vital cog for Luciano Spalletti’s quest for the Italian crown. Nainggolan further added:
“Give me the sun I will come [to the Premier League],” Nainggolan – who is under contract until 2020 – added. “I’m happy. Why give that away to begin again?
“I watch the Premier League a lot. A lot of my team-mates play there. It’s the best league in the world.
“We have to make choices in life. I am having a good season. When the window opens we will talk about it again.”
Talking practically, Chelsea will do a world of good with someone like Radja as they are a sure contestant of the Champions League next season, hence, a sustainable depth will be required and right at this very moment, the Blues do not really have that. Radja will not only bring the aggression, but will also add a new dimension.
He perfect eye to win the ball back is his primary attribute, but what differs Radja from Kante is that slight creative edge on the field. He certainly will be a great addition for the Blues.
