Barcelona’s club director Robert Fernandez has revealed that their midfield general Andres Iniesta will stay at the club for many more years.
The world cup winning midfielder is enduring an enigmatic time at the Cma Nou as he has missed a large chunk of La Liga fixtures due to injury. To add further to it, he has not been that effective this season and has also been quite inconsistent. In 15 league appearances this season, the 32-year-old has failed to net a goal and has only registered three assists.
Furthermore, his contract is about to expire in the summer of 2018 and no talks about the possible extension have been initiated by both the parties. However, Fernandez is certain that Iniesta will stay at the club for several more years.
“We want Iniesta to continue with us for many years to come; I hope he will be with us for a long time. I have no doubt that he will. I have no doubt that it will be so.” said the sporting director while talking to Movistar
This certainly is a great news for the Catalan club as their midfield is clearly struggling this season. Sergio Busquets’ effect has been put to bed as players around him, namely, Rakitic, Andre Gomes and Denis Suarez have been highly inconsistent.
Barcelona, on their part, are going to have a busy transfer window as they will be looking for a manager to replace Luis Enrique and to add to it, Lionel Messi’s contract situation is in the midst of nowhere, hence, getting a clear picture on Iniesta’s stay is a blessing in disguise.
The Catalonians have several players under their radar and the reported priorities are PSG’s Marco Verratti and Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho. Even though the latter has signed a new contract recently and has become one of the highest earning players at Anfield, it is understood that Barcelona are capable of offering a deal which will be hard to refuse.
