Reports from Spain have emerged that former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane stepped down from his role due to broken promises over Gareth Bale and Mohamed Salah.
Zinedine Zidane shocked the footballing world by stepping down as Galacticos’ boss just five days after guiding the club to their third consecutive UEFA Champions League crown. A game where the largely talked topic became Loris Karius’ blunders, Gareth Bale came on from the bench and went on to score a brace, including his spectacular over-head kick.
And according to Spanish outlet paper El Pais, this caused a stir between Zidane and the club’s owner, Florentino Perez. Perez had assured Zidane that he would sanction Bale’s sale over the past summer transfer window to fund a move for either Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard or Harry Kane, but his goal seemingly changed Perez’s mind.
He instead went on to claim “Bale is better than Ronaldo”, forcing Zidane to have second thought over his future. And it was on May 31, 2018, that Zidane announced his departure, claiming that the club need a change. Everyone, including Perez, was left baffled before the appointment of Julen Lopetegui was made official.
Zidane eventually went on leave – away from football – but said he will be considering a move back to the sport. Reports gathered pace and the legendary Frenchman was quickly linked with a move to Manchester United, as their current manager Jose Mourinho is extremely unsettled. The rumours further flamed when Zidane was spotted in London with his wife.
The English media ran a story which claimed the Portuguese will be sacked by the club after the Newcastle game irrespective of the result. The club’s hierarchy denied the reports and United went on to register a breathtaking 3-2 victory after going 2-0 down inside first 10 minutes.
As of now though, Zidane’s agent Alain Migliaccio has rubbished his client’s move to England, suggesting that the English style of play is not his genre. “I do not think that he will manage in England. It is much less his style. I have discussed it with him, it does not really attract him. He has chosen to have a year out, he will not dive in again before that is over.”
