Ligue 1 leader As Monaco cruised past Manchester City’s leaky defence with relative ease as goals from Mbappe, Fabinho and Bakayoko guided Leonardo Jardim’s side to the quarter-final.
The game was always going to be a cracker and it duly delivered what was promised. Mbappe opened the scoring and Fabinho doubled the advantage in the first half and even though Leroy Sane managed to pull one back for the visitors late in the first half, Bakayoko’s thumping header was enough for the Les Monégasques to beat the Citizens with an away goal advantage.
The visitor’s defensive unit was at fault for all the goals and it was poor marking which lead Pep Guardiola to crash out of the Champions League in the round of 16 for the first time in his career. One man, in particular, who was the target of Twitterazzi was John Stones. The £47.5m buy from Everton was well hyped around the country, but the former Everton man has failed to live upto the billing.
Monaco’s third goal – Bakayoko’s header – was majorly his fault as the Englishman lost his marker quite easily. After the game, the 22-year-old said:
“Very sloppy. Not up to our standard in the first half. We wanted to correct that but we weren’t clinical enough in both boxes.
“We didn’t score enough and weren’t defensively solid enough.”
Twitter, however, went crazy and criticized his performance like anything. Here are some of it:
Certainly, a question to ask –
Whose been the worst signing of the season?? Stones £50m or Pogba£90m ????????

One Evertonian was proud though –
To think we got 50 million for John Stones ??????????????????

Why can’t City defend? Because they paid £48 million for John Stones, who Everton paid £3 million for, and he was a liability!

Bonucci for Man City!
Don’t know what John Stones purpose is. He’s done nothing. Wish we would’ve bagged Bonucci last summer.

John Stones absolutely stealing a living as a top class centre half #bangaverage
