Liverpool and Newcastle United have often provided close encounters in the past. A couple of encounters in 1996-97 kept the fans on the edge of their seats throughout the 90 minutes. The two sides had yet another thrilling encounter in the 1998-89 series. Liverpool came from 2-0 down against a 10-man Newcastle United. Newcastle took the lead thanks to Nolberto Solano in the 28th minute, but a minute later their midfielder and future Red Dietmar Hamann was given his marching orders for a poorly timed tackle. However, Newcastle took a 2-0 lead thanks to Andreas Anderson in the second half. A determined Liverpool side, however, scored 4 goals inside 18 minutes to win the match 4-2. Michael Owen and Karl-Heinz Riedle scored two goals apiece to give the Reds all 3 points.
