On this day in 2015, a Louis van Gaal led Manchester United were scheduled to travel to Anfield to face Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool and a brilliant brace from Juan Mata saw the visitors emerging victorious 2-1. The victory saw United conquering the Anfield for the first time since September 2012 where ironically United had won 2-1. The first goal came in as early as the 14th-minute when Ander Herrera tracked his national compatriot, Juan Mata, making a run on goal. With the ball on his weaker foot, all Mata needed was precision and he did it with perfection. The second came in just a minute before the hour’s mark and it was simply breathtaking, to say the least. Combining with Angel Di Maria right outside the Liverpool area, Mata cruised past his marker before hitting a spectacular on the far post. The goal was a pure master-class, but the talking point of the game was Steven Gerrard’s red card. The Liverpool skipper was introduced by the stroke of half-time and received his marching orders just 38 seconds for stamping Ander Herrera on his ankle. Striker Daniel Sturridge pulled one back in the 69th minute, but that was it; United were victorious on the afternoon.
