Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar was recently honoured by the Barbie doll creators, who paid tribute to women of substance on the 60th birth anniversary of the brand. Dipa, who won the historic bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the first for an Indian gymnast was depicted in a Barbie doll theme by the makers. Karmakar’s Barbie is dressed in a red leotard singlet, with the hair in a tight bun and a bronze medal around the neck, making it ideal role model for young ones.
Deepa shared her joy on social media holding the commemorative gymnast Barbie with the message “Barbie has always shown girls that they can be anything!! On the occasion of her 60th anniversary, I am honoured to be selected as a Barbie Role Model to help inspire the next generation of girls!#Barbie60 #YouCanBeAnything,” on her official Twitter handle.

Barbie brand’s “Shero” campaign, which debuted on International Women’s Day 2019, rolled out a line of look-alikes dolls honouring several notable women who are dominating their industries. Apart from Dipa, the brand also honoured the global female role models in other sports fields. Japan’s tennis star Naomi Osaka, Brazilian surfer Maya Gabiera and Canadian ice skater Tessa Virtue are other women athletes who have been honoured.
The sale of these iconic dolls will contribute to the Barbie Dream Gap Project Fund. Barbie will donate one dollar from every doll sold in the USA up to $250,000. The funds will be managed through the Mattel Children’s Foundation, the company’s social impact arm.
