The season 6 of the Pro-Kabaddi League is about to get underway on Sunday with defending champions Patna Pirates taking on Tamil Thalaivas in the opening game of the tournament. The three-time champion have a completely new look side this season with new players coming into the side and star raider Monu Goyat swapping jersey for a record amount.
The question will be whether the defending champions be able to win the title for the 4th time. There are certain factors which could become a roadblock for Pardeep Narwal led side.
Loss of Monu Goyat and overreliance on Pardeep Narwal
Monu Goyat was the backbone of Patna Pirates alongside Raiding Machine Pardeep Narwal, but this year he will no longer be the part of pirates after been made the highest paid player by Haryana Steelers. Inspite of other signings like Deepak Narwal, Surender Singh and Tushar Patil, the consistency of Goyat will be missed.
On the other hand, Pardeep Narwal has been rampant against all the teams in the league and have been scoring points with ease. However, over-reliance on the star raider could also prove to be fatal if any team is able to keep him out of action for a considerable amount of time, as Pirates could find it very tough to get going.
Pardeep Narwal’s form a cause of concern
Pardeep Narwal’s fantastic form in PKL earned him a call-up to the national side and it was a dream start in Indian colors after winning the 2016 World Cup where he put up a good show. But after tasting victory at the World Cup, there has been somewhat fall in his performance and that reflected during the Kabaddi Masters Dubai 2018 and the Asian Games 2018. His vulnerability on the mat could dealt blow to Patna’s chances of lifting the title.
Inexperienced raiding and defence lineup
With Monu Goyat no longer in the side Deepak Narwal, Tushar Patil, Surender Singh and young players like Manjeet and Vikas Jaglan will have to pull up their socks and provide strong support to Pardeep Narwal. Patna’s defence also looks to have refreshing look. Jaideep, the corner defender was retained by the side but other defenders in the squad – Manish, Vikas Kale, Ravinder Kumar and Vijay Kumar need to be at their best.
The all-rounders like Kuldeep Singh, Jawahar Dagar and even the Korean pair of Hyunil Park and Tae Deok Eom will have to put up a consistent show.
