Hosts Haryana clinched the maiden Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay All India National Style Kabaddi Championship held at the Motilal Nehru School of Sports in Haryana. The tournament made headlines all over the country due to its prize money of 1 crore.
Haryana beat Railways with a scoreline of 33-27 to clinch the title. In the third place playoff game, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) beat Air India 45-37. The winners won the prize money of 1 crore, the runners-up fetched 50 lakhs and the team who finished in the third place won a prize money of 25 lakhs.
Haryana Cheif Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was present to felicitate the players and gave them the cash rewards. He also added that developing various sports in the state of Haryana was his top priority.
“525 sports nurseries are being established throughout the state with a cost of about Rs 10 crore.”
It is good to see such high rewards being awarded to the efforts of Kabaddi players. Kabaddi is a historic game in Indian sports history and deserves all the recognition it is being afforded currently. With more financial rewards, more youngsters will view the sport as a viable career option, which can only be good news for Indian sports. Keeping high cash rewards is only just the start and more needs to be done to develop games such as Kabaddi in Indian sports.
