The 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta Palembang is just a day away as Indian athletes are all set to test their mettle against the athletes from other Asian countries. The current contingent is a mix of youth and experience and will be expected to return with rich haul of medals from the upcoming event.
We look at some of the memorable moments that India has given in the previous edition of the continental event.
Indian Football’s golden moment
The men’s football team was not considered for the continental tournament in this years edition, but it was in the 1950’s and 1960’s that India football had the golden period. Under the leadership of Sailen Manna the team beat Iran 1-0 in the final of 1951 games in to win the magnificent gold. The country won the second gold in the game after beating Korea 2-1 in Jakarta in 1962.
The ‘Flying Sikh’ becomes the fastest man in Asia
Milkha Singh was the face of Indian athletics and it was in 1954 Tokyo games that he became the king of Asia. He went onto win medals in 200m and 400m in sprinting events in Tokyo. He has also declared the fastest man of Asia after his exploits in Japan.
When Payyoli Express shattered records in Seoul
After Milkha Singh exploits, India saw the emergence of yet another athlete PT Usha who went onto break records and win medals. She became Asia’s best-winning medals in the sprint event. In the 1986 Asian Games Usha shattered the records in the 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay and also won silver in 100m to win five individual medals. She also went onto create four games record in the event.
Mary Kom punches her way to maiden Gold
Five-time world champion and Olympic medallist was the favorite to win the title in the 51KG event. The magnificent Mary beat Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan 2-0 to become the first Indian woman boxer to clinch a gold medal at Incheon, South Korea.
