A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work to achieve the desired success. For Indian shooter Heena Sidhu it was more about gaining fathers attention and today not only she gained her father’s attention, but she is also one of the best shooter in the country.
For Sidhu, who belonged to a well-to-do family, making it to such a big level was not easy as she fought hard to earn her father’s approval. She recalled My father always wished that one of his children would represent India in sports. I have a younger brother and it was assumed by default that it would be him, so dad focussed entirely on his cricket. But I would do anything to get his attention, play every sport that came my way. I even tried shotput. But I was bad at everything she said while speaking on sidelines of Edelwisee event in Mumbai.
After trying a hand in every other sport, she decided to take up shooting as a hobby but never thought that it would lead her to glory one day
My uncle had a gun’s shop, and finally shooting which was a hobby took me to my goal she said.
If you think shooting is the only thing that she is good at you will be surprised to know that the shooter by night – works as a dentist during the day and also holds a dentistry degree and was a Bachelor of Dental Surgery Graduate.
While her father focussed on her brother’s career, her mother, who holds a masters degree hoped that Heena would study enough to make a living for herself, and pushed her towards academics.
I wasn’t bad at studies, so I got into medical school, but the two things pulled me in different directions. I wanted to gain my father’s attention, while my mother wanted me to become independent she said.
Heena Sidhu clinched Gold in 25m pistol event and silver in 10m air pistol in the recently concluded 2018 Commonwealth Games event. She also won bronze in 10m air pistol in 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
