Nicknamed ‘Cartman’ due to his excessive weight, the 25-year old from Wokingham, Marcus Willis has scripted one of the best fairy tales in the tennis circuit in recent times. From someone who was considering quitting professional play, it needed a great deal of coercing from his girlfriend to play in Wimbledon for the last time. And play he did! Being World number 775, the left-handed, Marcus had to beat several under-300 players in the qualifiers of Wimbledon, that too in harsh climatic conditions. Now the question arises, how did Marcus, with such a low rank even qualify for the qualifiers of the Wimbledon? Well, it was due to the fact that their highest ranked player at that time, David Rice fell out of the ranking places and Marcus got a nod in.
Emotions were running high when he faced 57-ranked, Ricardas Berankis on a small court, Court 17 in the first round. In spite of a small court, Willis had the backing of a tiny, yet a vociferous group of spectators who were egging him on at every point. With an unforced error from Ricardas, Willis sealed the game and opened the door to yet another dream, with a 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory. Up next for him, and the irony behind his dream run, is the dreamy superstar, Roger Federer himself. The Swiss master had himself in an interview, stated that Marcus Willis was one of the best stories to have been unearthed in tennis circuit and he looks forward to the contest. Even if Willis goes on to lose this contest, he has won millions of hearts and that is enough, for someone who was a nobody a few weeks back.
