The highly anticipated 2nd round match between 2-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza and British sensation Johanna Konta was delayed for around three-and-a-half hours for a pretty weird reason – seagull poo.
The match between the two started at 12.30 a.m. local time in Melbourne, simply due to the fact that Court 3 at Melbourne Park was in no condition to host the high-profile match.
The match between the two players was initially scheduled to take place on the Margaret Court Arena but the five-set epic meant that the organizers decided to move the match around to Court 3.
But there simply wasn’t enough staff around to clean up the mess which the seagulls had created on the court late at night.
Finally, the match began on the Margaret Court Arena where it was originally scheduled for at 12.30 a.m. The two players then had a hard-fought contest with Muguruza eventually prevailing 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 7-5. The official end time of the match was a staggering 3.12 a.m. local time.
Konta was less than impressed with the organizers after losing the contest, saying, “I don’t agree with athletes having to physically exert themselves in the wee hours of the morning. I don’t think it is healthy – in fact, it is quite dangerous. However, Garbine and I were both in the same position and, with the circumstances, we really put on a great match and it’s just a shame more people couldn’t enjoy it.“
