Tennis legend Serena Williams made a superhero entry and played her first Grand Slam match post motherhood. And tennis fans from across the world who were eagerly waiting to see the queen back playing in Grand Slams, couldn’t have asked for more.
Serena defeated 70th ranked Kristyna Pliskova of Czech Republic 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Tuesday, May 29. All eyes were on Serena on the big day, and the tennis star appeared on the ground in a black catsuit. She looked like a real superhero in her outfit that complimented her indomitable aura. However, there was much more to the dress than what met the eyes.
Relaxed after the victory, Serena shared, “I feel like a warrior wearing it, a queen from Wakanda [referring to the Black Panther movie] maybe.”
“It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically with their body to come back and have confidence and to believe in themselves. It’s a fun suit, but it’s also functional.”
However, once Serena was done with her job, all she wanted to do was to get back home to her 9-month-old daughter. “I want to get home and see Olympia because I have been here all day. Usually we hang out all the time. If I’m not practicing, we’re hanging out.”
“So that is the biggest difference. I’m concerned how that’s going to work out for me, because normally in Grand Slams, I do spend a lot of time at the site. She’s so young, I don’t really bring her. So, yeah, this is definitely going to be interesting.”
Many new mothers will relate to Serena’s concern and dilemma. The 23-time Grand Slam winner will play her next match on Thursday, May 31, against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, whose world singles ranking is 17.
