It was a comfortable win for the big names in the singles category on Wednesday as defending champion Roger Federer and Serena Williams entered the third round of the Wimbledon 2018 event at the All England Club in London.
Federer displayed some flawless tennis to comfortably despatch Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 in just 89 minutes. The World No 2 hit 48 winners and 16 aces in the match.
Federer is a third round tie against German world number 64 Jan-Lennard Struff who came back from two sets down to defeat 39-year-old Ivo Karlovic 13-11 in the final set.
While Federer and Serena strolled, Caroline Wozniacki suffered fresh Wimbledon woe as the world number two suffered a shock 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 defeat against Ekaterina Makarova. Federer, who is a 20-time major winner, is eyeing to become only the second player to win nine singles titles at the All England Club after Martina Navratilova.
Serena Williams making her comeback in the tournament after giving it a miss last year to give birth to daughter Alexis Olympia routed Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-4.
The seven-time champion brushed aside Tomova challenge in just 66 minutes with 24 winners and four aces. The 36-year-old, who won the titles in 2015 and 2016, is seeded 25th in the tournament
The 23-time major winner will next face France’s Kristina Mladenovic or Germany’s Tatjana Maria for a place in the last 16.
If she wins Wimbledon, Williams would equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
