Love knows no reason, no boundaries, no distance. This was proven true when two great athletes – India’s tennis star Sania Mirza and former Pakistan cricket skipper, Shoaib Malik fell in love with each other. And after eight years of successful marriage, they welcomed their first child into the world
This wasn’t a Bollywood story like Veer Zara where an Indian man fell in love with a Pakistani girl and the couple had to live away from each other for two decades or so because of Indo-Pak political rivalry. Well, the destiny’s script of Shoaib and Sania was simple – two lovers from different countries met, became friends, fell in love and lived happily ever after.
The couple initially met in the summer of 2004 in Australia but the meeting lasted just for about a couple of minutes. Their second meeting happened when Malik, along with Pakistan coach of that time Waqar Younis came to watch Sania’s match. Things still did not take a romantic turn for the two. It was the third meeting where it all began.
Strangely, it was the time when both the athletes were going through a rough patch in their careers. Sania was enduring an injury-laden phase while Shoaib was serving a one-year long ban from the Pakistan national team. During this time, the two found solace in each other and love blossomed.
The adversities surrounding them made them grow closer to each other and after a five-month-long courtship, both of them decided to get married.
As soon as the news went viral that they both are in love and have decided to get married – criticism started pouring in for the two from both sides of the border. The big athletes of two arch-rival nations were getting married – so the whole matter had to be given a political colour. The couple also received several threats to call off the wedding.
But despite the vast array of complications, accusations and obstacles being thrown their way, Sania and Shoaib did not budge on their decision. The wedding ceremonies commenced with a Mehendi ceremony at Sania’s home in Hyderabad and ended in Shoaib’s birthplace Sialkot with a lavish reception.
After their marriage, the couple decided to relocate to Dubai. Their marriage seemed to get the best out of them on the tennis court and the cricket field. Sania attained a world number one ranking in the women’ doubles whilst Shoaib became an integral part of the Pakistani cricket team.
Now, after an eight-year-long marriage, they welcomed their first child into the world and we wish them and the newborn the best of health and luck.
