If you are following the ICC World Cup 2019, you are bound to wonder…
Rohit Sharma
Born on: April 30, 1987, Nagpur, Maharashtra
Oozing style, elegance and panache, Rohit Sharma is easily one of the most attractive batsmen to watch when in flow. The massively talented Indian batsman holds the record for the highest individual score in ODI cricket history with that mind-boggling 264 he had smashed against Sri Lanka at Kolkata in 2014 and is the only cricketer in history to have scored three ODI double hundreds.
Though Rohit made his debut in early 2007 in the CB Series in Australia, he struggled to be consistent in the first six years of his career. It was only after he was promoted as the opener of the ODI team that his career took a complete turnaround. Since then, Rohit hasn’t looked back and has played several important and game-turning knocks for the country. He takes his time to settle in, but once he does, Rohit makes it count heavily by amassing huge scores. Today, he is one of the finest and most dangerous opening batsmen in ODI cricket.
Rohit has also had a very successful stint as the captain of the Mumbai Indians’ team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has captained them to a record three title victories till date.
While Rohit has been brilliant in the shorter formats, he is yet to leave a significant mark in Tests. An oft-repeated criticism against Rohit has been his languid nature while batting which affects his performances in the longer game.
Most memorable performance: 264 off 133 balls v Sri Lanka at Kolkata, 2014
Favorite shot: The cover drive and the pull shot.
Controversies: In the 2015 World Cup quarter-final between India and Bangladesh, Rohit was caught in the deep when in the 90s off a full-toss. However, the ball was adjudged a no-ball due for being above waist height. This caused a furore among the Bangladeshi cricket fans as they believed the decision was incorrect and biased.
Hobbies: Watching movies, traveling, playing video games and table tennis.
