The ‘biopic on athletes’ trend is getting hotter in Bollywood as film-makers are cashing on big names in the sports industry. Over the last few years, we have seen many biopics being churned out from the B-town, especially on sports personalities with movies like Soorma, Gold, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story etc. to name a few. The most recent is the one on Saina Nehwal which is still under making with Parineeti Chopra portraying the star badminton player on the silver screen.
Most of these attempts at recreating a person’s life story have proved to be commercially successful and film directors are trying their hands on this hot trend.
Continuing the trend, reportedly, another name added to the list of athletes is of Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar whose biopic is to be produced by film-maker Prakash Jha.
The noted film-maker Prakash Jha, renowned for his political and socio-political films, has reportedly acquired the rights to produce a movie on the ace wrestler.
According to a report of Inside Sports, the pre-production stage work is underway. It is not clear though whether the film cast has been finalised or who will play Sushil Kumar in the film.
Sushil Kumar’s life journey has been filled with immense success, struggle and controversies that would make for an inspiring biopic. The 2010 World Champion for his weight category, Sushil is the only Indian to win two Olympic medals in an individual sports discipline.
The Delhi-based wrestlers had bagged a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and a Silver in 2012 London Olympics.
Jha, known for his critically acclaimed political and social dramas like Gangaajal, Aarakshan, Rajneeti, etc., is producing this biopic. The strong combination of a great film producer and ace wrestler’s story should be a hit and we are excited to see what magic he is going to create on the silver-screen this time.
