He may not be a familiar name as the likes of Kidambi Srikanth, Parupalli Kashyap, Saina Nehwal, and PV Sindhu, but Subhankar Dey’s shock victory over 2 time Olympic Champion and 5 time World Champion Lin Dan from China has certainly brought him into the limelight and take the world notice of him. The World no 64 Dey defeated World No 14 Dan 22-20,21-19 in the SaarLorLux Open Badminton Championship in Germany on Thursday.
Having born in Kolkata, Dey moved to Thane in Mumbai to pursue his career in the sport. He grabbed the spotlight last year when he beat B. Sai Praneeth in the quarterfinals of the senior badminton nationals held in Nagpur.
The 25-year-old picked up the sport thanks to his sister. In 2011 he shifted to Bengaluru to train under Tim John.
Dey got off to a fine start in 2018 when he finished runner-up in the Kabal International tournament in the Czech Republic in March. The second place finish propelled him to a career-high ranking of 43.
He is very particular with his fitness and trains hard to keep himself in proper shape ahead of tournaments.
In the year 2017 Dey won Portugal and Ireland international. He played for Bengaluru Blasters in the Premier Badminton League.
In March this year, Dey made an announcement about opening ‘Shubhankar Dey Badminton Academy’ in Bengal. He currently stays in Denmark and plays for the professional club.
