In the world of sports, being gay can mean discrimination, stereotypes and a host of other restraints. However, instead of not coming out and revealing, some sports stars take a positive step forward to break the prevalent mindset and reveal they are gay. US basketballer Brittney Griner, Australian Southern Stars cricketer Alex Blackwell, Olympian snowboarder Belle Brockhoff, and footballer Michelle Heyman are all examples of sports stars who have come out and defied the norm to inspire others to do the same.
Megan Schutt took a brave move recently when she revealed her engagement to a woman, and consequently her status as lesbian. As the environment for gays and lesbians changes, stereotypes surrounding them may also grow less dense and give people a more broad-minded aspect to thinking about them. Sports may also be a grounds for this type of attitude-shift and social change on a larger scale. People were happy to see Megan Schutt make this revelation at such an opportune time in her life, especially in Australia where discriminatory groups of people still exist.
