A special day for a special someone, Mother’s Day celebrates the awesomeness all our moms have. Even in the world of sports, there are so many athletes whose love for their mothers are all over the internet.
Having athlete parents has proven to give us long legacies of amazing sports stars around the world. Athletes whose parents were in sports too have known to take the family name forward, but today we’re specifically looking at certain athletes whose mothers were great athletes too.
These women were at the top of their game during their time, and these mothers have been a major inspiration to their children, who took up sports as a career. Here is a list of such mothers who have been sports stars before.
AnnMaria de Mars (Mother of Ronda Rousey)
AnnMaria is not only the mother to MMA champion and WWE star Ronda Rousey, but she is also an author, an executive and the first American woman to win gold at the World Judo Championships.
A true pioneer for American women back then, Ann was a national champion when she went on to win all major competitions in the country for judo. It is no surprise then Ronda turned out to be a champion herself, getting her genes from her mother.
Fang Fengdi (Mother of Yao Ming)
Yao Ming is arguably one of the most recognized and prolific basketball players of all time. The 7 foot 6 inch sensation was a natural at the game at his peak and was a global icon. Yao Ming’s parents were both basketball players too back home in China. His mother Fang was 6 foot 3 inch and was the captain of the Chinese national basketball team.
She married Yao Zhiyuan and together they produced one of the most successful basketball players in Chinese history.
Sonya Curry (Mother of Stephen Curry)
Another basketball great Stephen Curry is part of a legacy that comes down a long line. Stephen’s mother Sonya Curry led two teams to state championships in high school and then went on to play volleyball at Virginia Tech where she was named to the All-Metro Team. She was considered a leader in athletics and still continues to make a difference in the education industry.
Els Vandecaetsbeek (Mother of Kim Clijsters)
Kim Clijsters was a former world no. 1 tennis player. Her success in the sport can be credited to her sports-rich family, including her mother Els Vandecaetsbeek, who was a national gymnast for her home country. She was world-famous during her prime. She later married an international soccer player and had another daughter who also was a tennis ace.
Anna Wozniacki (Mother of Caroline Wozniacki)
Former world no. 1 in tennis singles, Caroline Wozniacki also comes from a sports rich family. Her mother, Anna, was a famous volleyball player for Poland. The national team she was part of was considered one of the best in the world during that time.
