Wimbledon is a prestigious tennis event, known for its long-standing traditions and standard attire of white clothing. Any form of partnership with the event, short-term or long-term, is a win-win situation for both the entities.
OPPO, the Chinese smartphone brand has signed a 5-year partnership and will be joining an exclusive list that includes only 14 other companies, titled as ‘official supplier’ of the annual Wimbledon Championships. The partnership will officially come into play from 1 July 2019.
This is a record-making deal for OPPO since it is the first Asian partner of the All England Lawn Tennis (AELTC) as well as the first smartphone partner. OPPO was launched in 2008 and in the last 11 years, it has accrued a worldwide following. With this partnership, the brand will establish its follower base in Europe as well.
OPPO Vice President and new key opinion leader, Shen Yiren, attended the signing ceremony with Wimbledon. OPPO official said: “In the future, OPPO will cooperate with Wimbledon Championships in various fields to integrate elegant tennis art with OPPO’s scientific aesthetics.”
But this is not the first time that OPPO has forged a sports alliance. In 2015, the company signed a 3-year agreement with FC Barcelona to be the official partner of the football club. At the completion of one year of the agreement, OPPO released limited edition smartphones. The F1 Plus FCB was painted in the club’s traditional colors and various features reminded of crucial traits and elements of the team.
In 2017, OPPO also won the bid to sponsor the Indian national cricket team. As per the deal, OPPO won the rights to display their logo on the team’s kit from 2017 to 2022. This includes the Cricket World Cup 2019 and the T20 World Cup 2020.
