The latest collaboration between Nike and American fashion designer Virgil Abloh to make the news is the “Athlete in Progress” collection which taps into Nike’s historical and rich heritage in track and field.
The “Athlete in Progress” collection is to honour the incredible confidence of runners. Ever since the inception of the sport, these runners have combined their self-belief with consistency to always drive towards progress.
“I started talking with Nike about this women’s running project last summer and at the time, I was very much inspired by the aesthetic and style of track and field athletes. As a result, I invited some of Nike’s elite track and field champions to participate in my SS19 Off-White runway show as the natural forerunner to developing and showcasing the collection,” says Abloh.
Nike’s collaboration with Virgil Abloh, “Athlete in Progress” made its debut in Paris last September as part of the Off-White SS19 runway show. The ramp featured athletes like Dina Asher Smith, Vashti Cunningham, Cecilia Yeung, English Gardner, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Nafi Thiam, Caterine Ibarguen and Rénelle Lamote.
The shoes feature colourful rubber track spikes at the bottom, signature branding features and ‘SHOELACES’ printed on the shoelaces.
The Nike and Virgil Abloh collaborations are something that have been appearing in the news a lot recently. Rumour has it, the mastermind behind the ‘Off-White’ brand is all set to launch a women’s athletic collection sometime this year.
The “Track and Field” collection will reportedly include multiple pieces like jackets, running tops, tights, shorts, sports bras and tank tops. Colours will range from toned-down options like black and grey to more vibrant selections like yellow and royal blue.
The vibrant collection is set to release globally on 27 June 2019.
