Looking at her soft off court persona it’s almost unthinkable that Carolina Marin has gained the reputation of being one of the most aggressive players on court. Marin’s high-pitched grunts, furious muttering under the breath and hunger for win is something one can witness in every match.
She is passionate about what she does and can go to any miles to excel in what she does. That’s World No. 4 badminton star Carolina Marin for you. Not many know that the 25-year-old sporting star is a trained flamenco dancer.
Born in Huelva, Spain, where Flamenco is a popular dance form, Carolina wanted to become a professional dancer but destiny had something bigger and better planned for her.
It was in school that Carolina’s friend asked her to play this new sport, she was only eight-year-old then. She held a badminton racquet to give it a try and the rest as they say is history.
As there aren’t too many female badminton players in Spain due to it being less popular in the country, Carolina mostly trained with boys.

Carolina Marin first hit headlines when she became the first Spaniard to win the European Championship but she shot to immense fame when she defeated the then World No 1 and Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China to clinch the World Championship title. With the win, she became the youngest European to win the title at the age of 21. The biggest high of her career came when she went to become the No 1 in world ranking.
However, like any youngster of her age, Carolina loves to go for movies and shopping whenever she gets time. The young athlete loves to cook her own dinner and go to the mountains with her boyfriend.
Though she loves to dance, Carolina feels she has forgotten almost everything. However, when she retires from badminton, the badminton ace plans to learn flamenco once again.
