Indian shuttler Ashwini Ponnappa married her long-term boyfriend Karan Medappa, who happens to be a businessman and model, on Sunday (December 24) at a ceremony in Coorg, Karnataka.
The couple got engaged earlier in November and the marriage ceremony was commended as per the rituals of Kodava tradition. Soon after the wedding, a wedding reception took place in Virajpet. The 28-year-old doubles’ star, Ashwini, was donning a traditional Kodava saree while Karan’s attire was ‘Kuppasa Datti’, again a traditional wear.
The event was graced by the likes of Tennis player Rohan Bopanna and squash player Jyotsna Chinnappa amongst others.
Ponnappa is a well-known name at the international badminton circuit as she plies her trade in both women’s and mixed doubles. She came into the limelight while sharing the court with Jwala Gutta and went on to bag Gold at 2010 Commonwealth Games at home. In the following year, the pair won bronze at the World Championships, hence, became the first Indian pair and women to win a medal in the tournament.
On came the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow and Ponnappa went on to win a silver. This followed by a bronze at the Incheon Games in the same year. But after splitting with Gutta, Ashwini is now plying her trade with N Sikki Reddy in the international circuit.
We wish Ashwini a very happy and prosperous married life. Cheers!
